U. S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations prohibit the intentional release of refrigerants into the atmosphere. These substances such as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), and halons, are found in refrigerators, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners. The easiest way to dispose of a refrigerant-containing appliance is to arrange for the store you bought a new appliance from to take the old one (such as a fridge or home HVAC unit) when you replace a unit.
Many municipalities also have some kind of program in place for the collection of refrigerant-containing appliances, and you should understand and comply with these requirements. For specifics in your community, contact your municipal recycling office.
Westchester residents can deliver refrigerant-containing appliances to the Household Material Recovery Facility or to a scrap metal recycler who accepts these materials.

The County Department of Environmental Facilities issues stickers to such companies so the unit will be clearly marked as "ready for recycling."
